Generally, we take the formal photographs either after the wedding ceremony or during the cocktail hour, after the photo shoot. I usually recommend my clients to budget about three minutes per family picture so that they have time to interact with their guests as well.
While the lead photographer directs and captures the more formal photographs, my second shooters are trained to wait and hunt for the candid moments that happen between the shots. This is one of those expressions of love that happen naturally during the photo shoot between two posed images.
The way I work is the following: I go through a succession of photographs that generally the families want and allow the couples a few minutes in between and that is when the magic happens. The bride and groom though suspect that anybody is watching them in they are uninhibited. It is then when we capture smiles, laughter, and unprompted kisses. This is a perfect example of what happens when you leave the subjects behave naturally in front of the camera. Of course I was lucky enough to do this couples engagement photos and I knew what to expect, so on the wedding day I was ready to capture the split-second moments.
