Newlyweds Cut the Cake in the Crystal Ballroom

Cake cutting is an old tradition that is rigorously respected nowadays. The beautiful bride and groom decided to cut the cake at the end of the dinner right before their first dance in the Crystal Ballroom at King Edward Hotel.

While every wedding days different, during my consultations advise my couples to follow a series of steps so that we capture
the best cake cutting photographs. First, I asked them kindly to give me heads up at least five minutes before

The cake cutting happen so that I have time to setup the light the way want. Second I take a variety of shots from an environmental portraits of the newlyweds to detail shots of the hands holding the knife. The way you take the best photo of the newlyweds hands is by placing the bride's groom above the groom's. That way you can focus on the engagement ring as well and we all know how important it is for bride.

To ensure that nobody's jumping in front of me during the cake cutting, I make sure I am in the right angle first, before any guests or wedding videographers.
When I started my career as a wedding photographer I would use a long lens to capture the cake cutting and several times I almost missed the moment when a few overzealous guests jumped in front of me. My logic was simple: using my 70-200 mm lens with allow me to compress the background and achieve more compelling images. However because the guests ignored professional photographer, I had to change my strategy. As such, nowadays I use my 24-70 lens or its Fuji equivalent to capture the reception pictures including cake cutting.
