Groom Plays With His Niece at Kortright Centre Wedding

While the groom was getting ready for his outdoor ceremony at Kortright Centre, one of his nieces came close to him and started playing and making faces at him.

Despite all the stress related to the multitude of events, he took his time and started playing with her. As a wedding photographer, I recognize this golden opportunity and approached them quietly. I lowered my camera, pulled my tilt screen and pretended I was reviewing some photos I took earlier during the day.

As such, both my subjects completely ignored me and I was able to capture a few beautiful moments between them. I absolutely love being able to immortalize the split seconds where the subjects behave normally, unaware that they are being photographed.

Techniques

Behind the little girl, we can see her brother looking at them, which creates visual leading lines towards the main character of the frame, the groom.

To capture this image, I used my beloved Fujifilm XT2 and a 56 mm f1.2 lens. With its shallow depth of field, this lens achieves phenomenal subject isolation and can shoot in very dark like conditions, though focus could be a bit of a challenge, especially in the dark wedding venue.

For this image, I used the ambient light as I could not afford to become too obtrusive and missing the moments.

Body Language

When it comes to photography, body language plays an important role in conveying the message of the picture. For example here the groom is located very close to the little girl which indicates to the viewer that he is a close relative of hers. They are both laughing most sincerely in their eyes are expressing the same feeling.

This photograph was captured in one of the main floor rooms at Kortright Centre in Woodbridge.
